Noram SX™
Behaviour in Concentrated Nitric Acid (HNO₃)
NORAM SX™ (UNS S32615) is an austenitic stainless steel developed for use in strongly oxidizing acids. The alloy contains 4.8–6.0% silicon, which promotes formation of a stable silicon‑dioxide (SiO₂) layer when exposed to concentrated nitric acid. This layer gives the material a high level of corrosion resistance.
In nitric acid concentrations of 95–97%, the corrosion rate is essentially zero under typical operating conditions. Both the base material and welds show similar corrosion behaviour, including in systems with flowing acid.
Use of NORAM SX™ in Nitric Acid Environments
Due to its corrosion resistance and mechanical stability, NORAM SX™ is suited for equipment used in concentrated nitric acid service. The alloy has been applied for many years in oxidizing acid environments.
NORAM SX™
Examples of typical applications include:
- Acid piping and distribution systems
- Condensers
- Storage and buffer tanks
- Absorption towers and internal components
The combination of a stable SiO₂ surface film, low corrosion rate and solid mechanical properties contributes to reliable long‑term performance in demanding nitric acid processes.
