LIGNOFORCE™

NORAM and FPInnovations have jointly developed LignoForce™, a solution to recover lignin from black liquor, unlocking a new fossil-free, high value revenue stream while providing incremental pulp production. By removing part of the lignin from the black liquor, the process reduces the heat load to the recovery boiler, allowing for a higher chemical input which can increase production.

The heart of the process is our patented black liquor oxidation step which offers numerous benefits including reduced CO2 usage, elimination of odor issues, improved filtration rates, and practically eliminated H2S hazards. A standout feature is the use of a filter press with horizontal plates enabling in-place lignin washing, thereby reducing required equipment and the footprint.

To ensure maximum efficiency, NORAM has developed an optimal washing sequence for the lignin in order to save water while producing high-quality lignin. Additionally, to further reduce operating cost, the heat produced from the oxidation can be integrated and used for example, for the black liquor sent back to the evaporators to lower the energy requirements. We can also include a dryer and lime kiln burner, facilitating the transition to a bio-based fuel like lignin.
