Noram SX (UNS S32615) Delivers Sustainable Construction for Nitric Acid (HNO3) Processes

A Strategic Collaboration Between Metalko and Noram International

TNT production inherently involves handling highly concentrated nitric acid (HNO3). When a local TNT (trinitrotoluene) manufacturer in Poland faced the need to modernize its production line, it required exceptional material and mechanical expertise. The contract was awarded to the Polish mechanical engineering firm Metalko Sp. z o.o., a specialist in advanced welding and pressure vessel fabrication. The project encompassed the design and manufacturing of specialized storage and process vessels, where the choice of material was absolutely critical to the facility’s safety and operational lifespan.

Metalko: A Leading Force in Polish Industry

Metalko has established itself as one of Poland’s most trusted partners for complex industrial solutions. The company combines traditional craftsmanship with modern technology to meet the rigorous demands of the chemical and defense sectors. Their proficiency in handling specialty materials makes them a premier choice for high-stakes projects of this nature.

The Challenge: Corrosive Environments in TNT Production

The manufacturing of explosives requires handling highly concentrated acids. For this specific project, the scope of work included:

  • Two horizontal storage tanks: Units measuring 2500 x 6600 mm.
  • Three process metering tanks: Smaller units with a diameter of 400 mm.

The Material: Noram SX™ – UNS S32615

To guarantee the highest possible corrosion resistance, Noram SX™ was selected. Noram International delivered a comprehensive package of components to enable the construction:

  • Plates and Cut Parts: Plates in dimensions up to 2000 x 6000 x 8 mm, as well as precision-cut rings and discs in thicknesses up to 25 mm.
  • Piping Systems: Seamless and welded pipes in various dimensions ranging from DN25 to DN100.
  • Fittings: A complete set of elbows, tees, and reducers to create a fully integrated system.
  • Welding Consumables: Specific SX welding materials (MIG and TIG) to ensure that the joints maintain the same premium quality as the base metal.

All components were supplied in Noram SX UNS S32615.

Noram International: Global Expertise, Local Presence

Based in Gothenburg, Sweden, Noram International AB provides world-class material solutions. By combining their global expertise with Metalko’s technical craftsmanship, the European TNT industry now has access to a production line that is both efficient and safe. This project highlights the vital importance of selecting the right material from day one. In environments where corrosion can lead to catastrophic failures, the combination of Noram SX™ and Metalko’s engineering ensures long-term durability and safe operations.

Converter and Ducting Replacement, EPC

A Belgian acid plant has a new lease on life after a custom designed NORAM stainless-steel converter replaced one that had been in service for nearly half a century.

The challenge – to accommodate an even larger converter within an already tightly constrained footprint.

NORAM’s stainless steel converters have been setting design standards for sulfuric acid plants for many years. The converter’s operational flexibility, and the performance capability to meet stringent new SO2 emission standards, checked the first two selection criteria. Locating the new 6.2m diameter converter and associated ducting within the given space limitations checked the third.

The 4-stage converter was fabricated off-site and barged by river to the plant in one piece, before being lifted into place with pinhole precision during a 42-day shutdown. Design, supply, demolition and installation was supplied through the offices of NORAM International AB (Sweden) on an EPC basis, with sub-contractor support from Belgium.
